How to Contact your Legislator Information

There are currently numerous legislative issues before Congress affecting Veterans. One website that tracks many "people related" issues affecting Veterans is the Military Officers Association of America. Their "Contact your Legislator" page has several tabs and one of particular interest is the "Issues & Legislation" page at http://capwiz.com/moaa/home/  This page has bills that are of interest to Veterans, many of whom are military retirees.  This website also allows you to check out the bills before Congress affecting Veterans and contact your Senators and Representatives to tell them how you feel about certain bills.  Check out this website and let your voice be heard. Visit our "Links" page for  links to organizations that provide services to Veterans.

Click on MOAA Web Site  and contact your Federal, State and local  Legislators with issues that concern you in this election year!

ADDITIONAL FUNDING REQUIRED BY NVTI
Public Law 109-461

House Bill 1088 has been proposed and if passed, would direct NVTI to train all LVERs and DVOP
specialists within one year of hire.  This would create a need for additional funding to catch up
to those that have not yet been trained.  NVTI alumni are urged to send a letter to their congressional representatives to support the request for additional funding for NVTI.

                                                                                       (See the letter below.)

Dear Representative or Senator,

The purpose of this correspondence is to urge your support of HR 1088 to amend Title 38, United States Code, to provide for a one-year period for the training of new disabled veterans' outreach program specialists and local veterans' employment representatives by the National Veterans' Employment and Training Services Institute (NVTI) and to support the additional funding that would be required to implement this law change.

Current law requires that these specialists and representatives receive training within three years of their date of hire. To provide the mandated training to these new appointments and the staff who currently have not been trained by NVTI, I urge your support of additional funding of approximately $2,700,000 per year for two consecutive years to accommodate the additional training necessary to fulfill this new bill’s requirement. This cost includes travel and per diem expenses for personnel to be trained.

I am (name), a Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Specialist (DVOP) (or Local Veterans Employment Representative (LVER) (from area, address). My role is to assist all veterans, especially returning service members/veterans in attaining and keeping viable employment.

An essential contribution to my expertise and effectiveness on the job comes from training sessions I attend at the NVTI, including Labor Employment Specialist training, Case Management, Veterans Benefits and Promoting Partnerships for Employment. All these courses make me better prepared to assist our returning veterans in assessing their needs and addressing their specific employment issues, all aimed toward helping them get a job.

The passage of HR 1088 would require newly hired DVOPs and LVERs to complete the NVTI training required for their job within one year of their appointment. Training completion for DVOPs means Labor Employment Specialist (LES) and Case Management (CM), and for LVERs the required training is LES and Promoting Partnership in Employment (PPE).

In order for NVTI to be able to meet these requirements of law, an additional $2,700,000 million in funding per year for two years is needed for training the current DVOPs and LVERs.

Please support and champion additional funding for this vital training so we can benefit all veterans seeking employment nationwide, and especially our veterans here in (area).

Respectfully,

(Your Name)

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

The NVTI Alumni Association is in the process of updating all of the NVTI graduates' records with e-mail addresses so we can start sending out Legislative Alerts on information   that affects our graduates. We also would like to send newsletters and tips on resources   that help our graduates to better serve our Veteran population.

To insure that we can get information on Veteran's issues to you in a timely manner, we need you to keep us updated with your CORRECT E-MAIL ADDRESS.  E-mail is an efficient and cost effective way to use the resources that we have available to the Association. If you are using a state or local government e-mail address, you should consider setting up an account with one of the "free" e-mail services (such as Hotmail ) that would allow you to have a "permanent" e-mail address, regardless of how often your job related e-mail address changes. It would also cut down on the number of "bounced" e-mails that we have returned to us.

Please call  the NVTI Alumni Association at (303) 556-2549  or e-mail: julie.mullin@cudenver.edu   whenever you need your e-mail address updated so we can better serve you!

Looking forward to hearing from you!
